Practicing good personal hygiene is an essential aspect of food preparation. Personal hygiene refers to the habits and practices that individuals perform to keep their bodies clean and healthy. It plays a significant role in food safety and preventing the spread of diseases.

One of the most basic practices of personal hygiene is regular handwashing. Hands are the primary vehicles of bacterial transmission, and touching food with unwashed hands can introduce harmful bacteria into the food. Food handlers must wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before handling food, after using the toilet, coughing, sneezing, blowing the nose, touching hair, and touching other parts of the body.

Food handlers should also keep their hair tied back or wear a hairnet to prevent hair from falling into the food. Loose hair can carry bacteria, and hair in food can cause customers to lose their appetite and question the hygiene standards of the establishment.

Personal hygiene also extends to clothing. Food handlers should wear clean clothing that covers their body to prevent hair, skin, and other particles from contaminating the food. Clothing should be changed daily or when soiled.

In addition to handwashing and clothing hygiene, food handlers should also practice good oral hygiene. Food handlers should brush their teeth, use mouthwash, and avoid smoking or chewing gum while preparing food. These habits can reduce the risk of bacteria or other contaminants entering the food.

Another crucial aspect of personal hygiene is keeping a clean work environment. Surfaces, utensils, and equipment should be cleaned and sanitized regularly to prevent cross-contamination. Cross-contamination occurs when harmful bacteria from one food or surface spreads to another.

In summary, personal hygiene is crucial for food safety and preventing the spread of diseases. By practicing good hand hygiene, wearing clean clothing, keeping a clean work environment, and maintaining good oral hygiene, food handlers can ensure that they are doing their part to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and provide customers with a safe and enjoyable dining experience.

Environment is nice - new, clean. However no hardcopy material is given. Only lent us, can't write notes on it. Yet the soft copy version can't be print due to their settings. Is kinda difficult and annoying to study without material notes.

Singapore Food Agency video on Food safety

Good hand hygiene is essential in Singapore because it helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Singapore is a densely populated city-state with a high level of international travel and trade, making it more vulnerable to the spread of communicable diseases.

In addition, Singapore experiences tropical weather, which can create an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and viruses. This makes it even more important to practice good hand hygiene to reduce the risk of getting sick.

Good hand hygiene includes washing your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after being in public places. It also involves covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, avoiding touching your face, and staying home when you are feeling unwell.

By practicing good hand hygiene, you can help protect yourself and others from the spread of infectious diseases, such as influenza, COVID-19, and other respiratory illnesses. This is especially important in Singapore, where a large portion of the population lives in close proximity to one another, making it easier for diseases to spread.
