What Is a Reach Truck? Uses, Features and Safety Basics

How a reach truck works
Reach trucks use a retractable mast or fork carriage. The operator approaches the rack, stops in a controlled position, raises the load to the required level and extends the load-handling mechanism towards the rack. After placing or retrieving the pallet, the mechanism retracts before travel.
This design reduces the space needed for counterweight behind the truck and enables operation in narrower aisles than many conventional counterbalance forklifts.
Typical applications
Reach trucks are commonly used in distribution centres, cold stores, manufacturing warehouses, retail fulfilment facilities and high-density storage environments.
They are most effective on level, smooth floors with planned racking layouts. They are generally not selected for rough yards, broken surfaces or loading tasks where a counterbalance forklift is more appropriate.
Main components operators should recognise
Important components include the forks, fork carriage, reach mechanism, mast, load backrest where fitted, overhead guard, operator controls, braking system, steering, battery, wheels, warning devices and capacity plate.
The operator should understand what each component does and which defects require the truck to be removed from service.
Why operator visibility is different
The mast, load and racking can restrict forward visibility. Operators may need to travel in the direction that gives a clear view, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions and site rules. Cameras and height indicators can assist but do not replace direct observation and safe positioning.
Core safety principle
Keep the truck stable by staying within rated capacity, keeping loads controlled, travelling at a safe height and speed, avoiding abrupt steering, and ensuring the floor and rack position are suitable before lifting.

Can it load a lorry?
